However, as with any vaccine, completion of the full course is crucial for its effectiveness. The fourth and final dose, or booster, is essential to prolong immunity, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Unfortunately, health workers are facing a challenge in ensuring that children return for this critical dose.
The issue of incomplete vaccination is not unique to Cameroon. A study conducted in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi during a malaria vaccine pilot program revealed a similar trend. While coverage for the first dose, administered at around 6 months of age, reached an impressive 80%, it dropped significantly to 46% for the fourth dose, given between 22 and 24 months.
So, what's causing this gap? Researchers have identified several factors, including transport costs, lack of reminders, poor follow-up, and competing responsibilities such as work or childcare. These challenges highlight the complex reality of vaccine rollout, especially in regions with limited resources and infrastructure.

She emphasizes that these teething problems should not overshadow the value of the vaccine.
